University Preparation Program - a UTAS preparation course

 

Have you always dreamed about going to uni but didn't have the marks?

Or have you been out of school for a while and would like to brush up on your academic skills before you start a degree?

UTAS has a preparation program called the University Preparation Program (UPP) which provides people with an alternative entry pathway into University and it is free. It is designed for mature-age students who want to make BIG life changes to provide them with alternative pathways for a fulfilling life. If you are considering enrolling at UTAS but feel you may need additional skills, confidence and knowledge about university study before commencing a course, then UPP is the course for you. By taking little steps with support from our staff you will make significant and fulfilling changes to your life.

What does UPP aim to do?

The course aims to prepare mature-age students with the necessary and academic skills to succesfully complete University study. It also aims to build students' confidence to succeed at what their dreams for study are and to enhance the quality of their initial experience of University life.

The Program has a number of delivery modes: face-to-face delivery, online and HELP sessions.

UPP support is offered on all three campuses at UTAS.

What does UPP offer?

The UPP offers a broad range of subjects designed to ensure students have skills which are critical to success at the University of Tasmania. Units are offered in both first and second semester with each semester involving 13 weeks of study to complete the unit. The UPP offers the following units:

UPP010 Study Skills

UPP020 Written Communications

UPP030 Communication Skills

UPP040 Information Literacy

UPP050 Using Technology

UPP060 Applying Technology

UPP070 Preliminary Academic Activities

UPP080 Academic Studies

UPP090 Bridging Maths

Study Skills, Written Communications, Using Technology, Preliminary Academic Activities and Bridging Maths are offered in Semester 1. In Semester 2, all nine units are offered, providing that there is a minimum level of 15 students enrolled in each unit. Students may choose a maximum of 4 units each semester. (*Note - the units UPP060 and UPP080 are not available in second semester 2009).

How much will it cost?

AUSTUDY or ABSTUDY is available to students who are accepted into this course and meet appropriate criteria. You do not become liable under the Higher Education Contribution Scheme (HECS) for this course.

Do I get any credit for this course?

Satisfactory completion of the UPP does not does not guarantee admission to any specific program at UTAS but can be used as evidence of recent study when applying for admission to the University. UPP is a non-credit course which provides a transcript indicating your achievement in various units.

How to apply for UPP?

  1. Download an application form and complete clearly indicating which course (University Preparation Program) you are applying for. The course code is EOD. For help in completing an application, read the UTAS UPP Guidelines.
  2. Complete the application in full - addressing at least the first four selection criteria AND indicate the subjects you would like to study on the table at the bottom of the page.
  3. Post the application form to: Locked Bag 1335, Launceston 7248.
