Starting or resuming study can be a daunting experience. UTAS has a wide range of support programs available to assist commencing students as they embark on tertiary study. For further details about these programs, please view the 2008 Enabling & Supporting Programs brochure.
Transition Programs
These provide the opportunity to further develop skills to succeed at university in areas such as IT, communications and critical thinking. These programs range from a 5 day pre-semester course through to a full year of preparation.
UniStart
This five day pre-semester face-to-face program aims to improve tertiary literacy, and begins to develop essential skills required for independent learning and success at university, such as essay writing, academic reading, and critical thinking. The program is supported by online resources and is also available fully online.
UPP (University Preparation Program)
A pre-university program for potential students, particularly adults, which covers a range of academic skills. Students select units most relevant to their needs, building the personal skills and confidence necessary to succeed at university. Students may enrol in one UPP unit while enrolled in an undergraduate degree in order to address specific skill needs or may need to complete a full semester or full year in UPP. Subject areas available include Study Skills, Written Communication, Bridging Maths, Information Literacy and Using Technology.
Foundation Studies Program – for International Students only
Specifically designed for international students who need to upgrade their academic results to meet university entry requirements. This program is an intensive 32-week preparation for direct entry to many undergraduate degree courses offered by UTAS.

The following programs are available to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students. There is no fee for participation.
Orientation and Assessment Program
Introductory program for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students.
Murina (Pathway) to Higher Education Program
Enabling program for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students. Run over two 13-week semesters, including field trips and other cultural activities.
Indigenous Tutorial Assistance Scheme (ITAS)
Individual or group tuition for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander undergraduate students.
Short Bridging Programs
These offer subject specific units of study, suitable for people who do not have the necessary prerequisite subjects to embark on their chosen degree.
Thinking & Writing at University
Designed to develop and assess thinking and literacy skills essential to study at university level, with a particular focus on basic and tertiary literacy, critical analysis and information literacy. Acts as a core foundation of the Associate Degree in Arts and is available as an elective unit in other degree programs.
School of Art Preparatory Studies
Prepares students for tertiary study in Fine Art and Design, through an introductory program of art theory and studio-based exercises. The foundations of critical thinking and writing about art and design will be introduced through a program of seminars, tutorials and written exercises. The foundation elements of studio-based art and design will be introduced through practical exercises in two and three-dimensional media.
BioStart
Offered for Bachelor of Health Science, Bachelor of Human Movement, Bachelor of Nursing, Riawunna students and students without a TCE science background. Also suitable for alternative entry and mature age students returning to study.
Introduction to Quantitative Methods
This unit is suitable for students who do not have a recent maths background, and serves as a refresher and/or preparation unit prior to enrolment in BEA140 Quantitative Methods 1. BEA101 is a core first year unit in the Bachelor of Business and Bachelor of Economics degrees.
Chemistry Foundation Unit
Essential knowledge and practical skills to satisfy prerequisites for first year units requiring chemistry. This is a self-paced program, requiring online computer access and compulsory attendance at laboratory sessions. Students need to have been offered a place at the University to undertake this unit.
Life Science Foundation Unit
Essential knowledge and practical skills for students in introductory Biological Science. This unit provides guidance to the standards required in first year Life Science studies. Comprises 15 x 2 hour tutorials (30 contact hours) over five days with a supplementary online component. Students need to have been offered a place at the University and be enrolled in a first year Plant Science or Zoology unit.
Physics Foundation Unit
Essential physics for interested students, this unit satisfies the prerequisite for first year Physics units and includes a one-day compulsory practical session (Hobart only).
Mathematics Foundation Unit
For students who plan to enrol in a first year unit in Computing, Science or Engineering that has mathematics prerequisites. Self-paced program taught through a combination of independent learning, lectures and tutorials.
Law Bridging Seminars
A series of seminars offered for students enrolled in core Law subjects for the first time, who have not studied Introduction to Law.
